Donelson Business News - August 2016

Welcome to Donelson, Frost-Arnett, which has just moved from downtown to Elm Hill Pike and has added more than 60 new local employees.  Read about their move to Donelson and expansion in the Nashville Business Journal article here.

We welcome another new business to Donelson, It’s That Simple Dance & Fitness at 2720 Old Lebanon Pike in the Donelson Plaza.  They offer personal training, fitness classes, dance classes, nutritional advice and much more.

Lakeland Pointe is a new residential community in the works from Frank Batson Homes.  Located at 410 Donelson Pike, these beautiful homes will be the first of their kind in Donelson and offer many beautiful amenities.  Check them out here.

Another new business coming to Donelson is Paper and Ink Arts.  They recently purchased a vacant building on Graylynn Drive and are in the process of rehabbing it.  Check out their website here and their Facebook page here to keep up with their progress.  They also have a local market survey for the community to provide feedback here.

I have been working with Metro Planning and management at Opry Mills to amend the existing zoning code to allow Smith Creek Moonshine Distillery to operate there.  This would be a unique amenity at Opry Mills and I welcome the additional entertainment draw being offered.  Read about it in The Tennessean’s article here.

Donelson Business News - June 2016

I had a great meeting with a few Google Fiber execs to learn more about the status of the installation and much anticipated roll out of their service.  They’ve completed the design of the network and as we’ve seen, have been busy building it.  This is a big undertaking!  Once complete, the network will include more than 3,200 miles of fiber, enough to stretch from here to Canada and back.  They are working hard to make disruption in the neighborhoods to a minimum.  They have a 24-7 Construction Inquiry Line at 877-454-6959 if you have any issues.  With the underground infrastructure going well, there are a few logistical issues to work through as far as the above ground wiring, but they are making good progress.  Sign up here to keep up to date with their progress and as soon as service is available, that’s how to get notified.

Nashville will be the home of a new Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum opening in 2017 at Opry Mills.  Read more about it in this article from Music Row Magazine.

Metro’s Planning Department has a great Parcel Viewer website as well as a Development Tracker website where you can view current ownership and zoning information and track developments as they move through the process.  I have a few rezoning processes happening.  They are:

  • 1620 and 1634 Lebanon Pike – We’re changing their zoning from CL to CS-A, which allows the owner a bit more flexibility in use of the property.  They don’t intend to redevelop.  It will likely be an Enterprise Truck Rental business once the zoning approval is complete.  No neighborhoods are impacted by this.
  • 720, 724 and 728 Ermac Drive.  This was already zoned to ORI some hears ago to permit a Candlewood Suites Hotel.  This is request to revise the preliminary plan for the Planned Unit Development.  It is scheduled to be heard at the Planning Commission on April 28th.  This project has my support and is a good development adding to the hotel options in the Century City area.
  • 2535 Perimeter Place.  This already passed Planning Commission and is headed to Council.  This is also a good development in the Century City area adding to the hotel options in the area.

We have four new hotels in the works for District 15!  Three of them all are zoned for it already – Music Valley Drive, Elm Hill / McGavock Pike and Ermac Drive in Century City.  Another on Perimeter Place in Century City will have to go from IWD (Industrial) to a SP (Specific Plan).  It’s currently an undeveloped piece of property near Piedmont Natural Gas’s headquarters.  All four projects are positive developments and further highlight how important our district is as a “Hospitality Gateway” for Nashville.

Donelson has a new business that’s a School of Music – Rock Zone!  Located at 2541 Park Drive, they offer an after-school program, private lessons and more.  Check out their website here for more details and contact info.

Great news about a new tenant at One Bridgestone Park, former home of the International Academy of Design & Technology (who has now moved to the Music Valley area).  The Tennessee Board of Regents will be moving in to the former original Bridgestone headquarters and make it their own HQ.  This will bring 112 jobs to this building and be great for our area restaurants and retail shops.

The Nashville Business Journal announced the 2015 Corporate Giving Awards and Smart Space was a winner among many great companies.  Congratulations to Smart Space President Floyd Shechter and the whole team for a very deserving award!

As Nashville and Middle Tennessee continue to create a master plan for mass transit in our region, the Music City Star is becoming more attractive in that the foundation is already built.  Mt Juliet and Wilson County are working to develop the areas around their train stations into true transit-oriented-development areas.  Our Donelson Station is the first train stop outside of downtown Nashville and could be a very tangible solution to offering more transit options.

Congratulations and welcome to The Dixie Drip mobile coffee shop with lunch, ice cream and more to the heart of Donelson on Old Lebanon Pike.  Upon moving to The Donelson Plaza area, neighbors have been raving about the great coffee, food and service with a smile.  Be sure to check them out.

Hip Donelson is hosting the second annual support of Small Business Saturday on November 28th.  Shoppers will be given a card to take to all participating businesses to be punched.  Those completed cards will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket with items from participating businesses.

The 2015 Toast of Music City Awards were held recently and Donelson businesses were very well represented.  Congratulations to all the winners!  I hope I didn’t miss any, but the ones on the list I saw were:

I enjoyed the opportunity to welcome our new and improved Raceway service station at their grand opening ribbon cutting recently.  It’s a big improvement to the property and the staff were very friendly and wanted to the community to know they’re here to serve.

Congratulations to Homegrown Taproom & Marketplace for having a very successful grand opening and incredible first couple of weeks.  The marketplace is still in progress and should be open later in the Fall.  It’s a great new neighborhood business and my thanks to Robin Davis and Jennifer Starks for bringing it to Donelson.

Check out these photos of beautification done by The Print Shop.  They’ve been in business since 1975 and we thank them for continuing to serve the community with pride!

April Business News

One of the biggest news stories of the month was the announcement of SmartSpace bringing 370 jobs to Donelson!  Automated Health Systems is a new company coming to Nashville and Covance brings 120 jobs from downtown relocated to Donelson.

A great new business started by neighbor Christopher Hodges is Heirloom Archaeology, LLC.  Christopher helps return lost artifacts that reconnects generations in families.  It’s as fascinating business and the recent stories of his success are found on his website and Facebook page.

You may have noticed construction occurring over at The Crossings next door to CareSpot.  That will be Yats, a Cajun Creole restaurant chain from Indianapolis that looks delicious.  They’ll have an open deck area as well on the side of the building.  They should be open this summer.  I spoke with the owner and they’re excited to be part of the community.

At my campaign kick-off last September, I mentioned that Ryman Hospitality Properties was working towards the Grand Ole Opry House being added to the National Register of Historic Places.  Normally this designation is reserved for properties that are 50-years or older, but the Grand Ole Opry House at 41-years is being added early because of its significant contributions to culture and arts.  The Grand Ole Opry celebrates 90-years this year and has a Birthday Bash Weekend scheduled for October 2-3.

Bridgestone’s announcement to consolidate offices and expand their headquarters in a new tower downtown that will create over 600 jobs was one of the biggest announcements for 2014.  The 15th District is home to Bridgestone’s current headquarters and will be through 2017 while the new tower is constructed.  This also presents a great opportunity to find the next company to move into their current building and create even more jobs.

By now everyone has noticed that Johnson’s Furniture isn’t at 2620 Lebanon Pike anymore.  They’ve moved to Elm Hill Pike.  I’m excited that the new owner of the building is SmartSpace, who have done great things in Donelson by restoring buildings and giving them new life and beauty as well as filling them with great companies that provide solid career opportunities as well.  Thanks to SmartSpace President Floyd Schechter for sharing these renderings of what we have to look forward to seeing after the rehab is complete!  To inquire about leasing, contact Anthony Caduff at 615-251-8900.  The building will now be called the 2620 Building.

Donelson Business News

Over the past couple of years, Donelson’s renewed economic development has shown promise and progress.  The redevelopment of The Crossings shopping center bringing new restaurants and businesses, to sidewalk infrastructure improvements, and new businesses in the community have been welcomed signs of an improving overall economy and renewed investment in Donelson.

The new life and vitality at the old Two Rivers Ford building when Ace Hardware moved in to the space along with Phat Bites, which became host for the weekly Hip Donelson Community Farmer’s Market, has been a real destination for both neighbors and visitors this summer.  The Market will return next May.  A wonderful addition to the Market has been the CedarStone Bank Entertainment Stage.  I’m thrilled to have been involved in helping book music and my thanks go to CedarStone for their sponsorship that has allowed us to make that happen.  You may have noticed that construction began recently for their new branch at the intersection of Donelson Pike and Lebanon Pike.  It is a welcome sight to see on a piece of land that has been empty for many years.  Just a few months prior, Wilson Bank & Trust opened their doors to a brand new branch on Donelson Pike next to JVI Secret Gardens.
