Today I sent out a press release announcing the “Safe Schools and Communities: Addressing the Gun Violence Epidemic” meeting series. As Chair of the Metro Council Public Health & Safety Committee, I will be leading a series of school safety and gun violence epidemic meetings to help strengthen the Nashville community and find solutions to reduce gun violence. We are encouraging the members of the public to submit questions or comments for any of the three meeting topics ahead of time online here.

New Donelson Branch Library

A couple weeks ago, we had the opportunity to celebrate the “topping out” ceremony for our new Donelson Branch Library. I’m pleased to report its ahead of schedule. Target completion date is still around Spring 2024.

Titans Stadium and East Bank: Why I Support the Plan

Over the last couple of years, we have been thoughtfully putting together a plan for the East Bank. The Titan’s stadium is the anchor development of the East Bank that needed its own careful consideration as we’ve deferred required maintenance of it for many years and we’d have to start pulling debt to meet our obligations. There is an extraordinary opportunity here to plan for development that benefits all Nashville-Davidson County. This will be an area that will take a decade or more to build out. Going into this two years ago, I had two fundamental questions to weigh the stadium decision of whether to renovate or build new, as well as how East Bank development should proceed. 1) What is the best scenario for Nashville-Davidson County taxpayers, and 2) Is this development that will benefit every resident of Davidson County?

Support for The Covenant School Families, Titans Stadium, Reduction of Council, and Change in Civic Design Center Event

Dear Friends,

I share our community’s heartbreak and anger about the mass shooting and murder of three children and three adults at The Covenant School. I am very thankful for the heroism of all our Metro Nashville Police Department Officers, and in particular Rex Englebert and Michael Collazo, who raced into danger and put a stop to it before others were killed. We honor the victims and hold them and their families close in our hearts.

I’ll be doing a full newsletter in the near future. I’m sending this to get information out about a community meeting I’m hosting with Council Member Emily Benedict about the Gleaves Farm.

Please us on Wednesday, February 15 at 6:30pm via WebEx to review updated plans for the Gleaves Farm property on Pennington Bend. Members of the public may attend in person; however, the presentation will be made over WebEx and participation via WebEx is strongly encouraged.

CM Syracuse and CM Benedict will be conducting the meeting from Committee Room 1 at the Historic Metropolitan Courthouse. Paid parking is available in the garage underneath the Courthouse.

A Donelson Christmas

This Saturday, December 3rd at 4pm will be our annual Donelson Christmas Tree lighting. As our new Nashville Public Library Donelson Branch is under construction, we’re moving the tree lighting to FiftyForward Donelson Station, which is very convenient for everyone to enjoy the Donelson Hermitage Chamber of Commerce’s 37th Annual Christmas Parade at 2pm along Donelson Pike from Elm Hill Pike to FiftyForward and be right there for the tree lighting at 4pm.

Metro Council At Large Campaign

Finally, as you’ve no doubt heard and seen, I have decided to run for Metro Council At Large in the August 2023 election. I want to take my laser focus and passion for Donelson and apply it to the whole county. It’s been a humbling opportunity to lead Donelson through balanced growth and development as all of Middle Tennessee continues to grow at a rapid pace. As “Downtown Donelson” comes to life through our new Donelson Branch Library and a revitalized Donelson Station to ensuring historic protections, single-family neighborhoods and rural areas in the county are supported and preserved, we can find a way to channel our success as a city into the support our neighborhoods need across all of Davidson County. We need to push harder on creating the intersections between transit and affordable housing as well as our efforts to ensure our growth also means sustainable and resilient communities that grow with thoughtful intention.

Appointed Committee Chair of Public Health and Safety

Vice Mayor Shulman announced new Committee Chairs and has appointed me Chair of Public Health and Safety. As we emerge from the worst of the pandemic, deal with the fentanyl crisis, advance our co-response model for public safety, and more in this area, I will be focused on these areas and more in my role. I want to thank District 12 CM Erin Evans for all her great efforts as the last Chair of this committee.

Metro Schools now an “Advancing” School District

I am very proud to share that Metro Schools has announced that student academic achievement is improving, and the district is now an “Advancing” school district, which is the second highest rating a school system can achieve. That’s largely based on TCAP scores and then schools are broken down into three categories – Reward, Priority or Targeted Support. There are many more schools in the Reward category this year.
